Halloween Safety Tips for Dogs
KEEP FIDO SAFE DURING THIS HALLOWEEN SEASON
Many families want to include dogs in their Halloween celebrations, which is an excellent way to keep the family together. Use these tips to keep dogs safe throughout the Trick-or-treating.
Dogs should not eat Trick-or-treat candies. Chocolates and other candies are dangerous to pets. All types of chocolate contain a substance known as theobromine, which causes vomiting, diarrhea, tachycardia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma, and death. Dark chocolate and unsweetened cocoa have a higher concentration of the toxic substance, therefore, are more dangerous for dogs. Some Halloween candies may contain an artificial sweetener called xylitol. This substance is toxic to dogs. Low doses of xylitol cause a decrease in blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) and high doses can cause liver failure and death. This substance is absorbed quickly, so inducing vomiting after ingestion is not helpful.
Keep dogs under continuous supervision. There will be many people knocking at the door, and a lot of noise and activity around the house, all of which can be very stressful to dogs. If you decide to include your dog in the Halloween celebration keep him/her leashed at all times and choose a family member who will be responsible of supervising the dog at ALL times.
Choose the right pet costume. If you decide to put a custom on your dog, make sure that he/she feels comfortable in it. Your dog should be able to move freely and bark in his/her custom. If your dog looks distressed or shows any kind of abnormal behavior, you should remove the pet custom.
Don’t forget your dog’s I.D. Name tags are especially important in days like this. If your dog should escape and become lost, having the proper identification will increase the chances that he/she will come back home. You can have some fun while you protect your pet with these Personalized Pet ID Tags.
